Introduction

This website is dedicated to researching our Compton ancestors that originated in early Russell County, Virginia.

Three Compton men; Jeremiah, David, and Thomas, appeared in Russell County records between the years of 1806 and 1810 in the Thompson Creek area outside of what is now Honaker, Virginia.  These men migrated from North Carolina and were brothers, sons of Revolutionary War Veteran James Compton.

Most Compton’s in present day Buchanan, Dickenson,  and Russell County, Virginia plus Pike/Letcher County, Kentucky can trace their ancestry to one of these pioneer Compton men.
Unfortunately, the genealogy of these three men have been confusing and misleading over the years primarily due to undocumented statements made in a publication called Comptonology published in the 1940’s.  Comptonology provided early Compton researchers with much great information and family history, only a few unsupported statements led researchers astray in their search for the early Compton family of Russell County, Virginia.  Please follow this link to review a synopsis of information found in Comptonology.

This website will also explore Revolutionary War Veteran James Compton (circa 1753 – 1832) who is the father of the above-mentioned Jeremiah, David, and Thomas Compton.  For more information on James Compton please click on his name or follow the link above.  A few early Compton women of Russell County passed the Compton name on to their children who then passed it on, please click here for an analysis of these Compton women.

The two main problems facing researchers of Jeremiah, David and Thomas Compton were determining their relationship to one another and aligning their children with the proper father.  The primary tools used to align the male children of Jeremiah, David, and Thomas were the Russell County, Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists and will of David Compton.  For a complete analysis of the Compton’s on the Russell County, Virginia Tax Lists please click here.  Obviously other primary sources were used such as deeds, court records, marriage, death, and birth certificates.  Unfortunately, we have been unable to determine a complete list of daughters for Jeremiah or Thomas.
